Songs To The Orishas: Lucum at Freight & Salvage

     Acclaimed Lucumí (Yoruban Cuban) priestess and singer, Bobi Céspedes, will lead this two-part workshop on the chants used in Santería religious ceremonies (Bembé) to summon Orisha-- divine forces manifested through nature. Through the Bembé ceremony, the community unites in song and dance to garner blessings. Oro Cantado refers to the song cycle used in Bembé, and is led by the akpwon--the song leader and master of ceremonies. The chants, sung in order, in a call and response pattern, provide everyone the opportunity to fully participate in this celebration of praise. The influence of the Lucumí on Cuban culture and identity is vast and references to these chants permeate popular Cuban music and dance....
