4 I might go! Add to calendar 2012-11-10 2012-11-10 35 Patty Ascher at Pagoda Lounge, Fairmont Hotel San Jose Jazz, the Government of Brazil, Fairmont Hotel, and Universal Grammar present Patty Ascher Live at The Pagoda.

Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Patty Ascher grew up in a musical household. Her father Neno was part of a very successful Brazilian band from the 70s called Os Incríveis (The Incredibles). As a singer, she cites Brazilian divas Leny Andrade and Gal Costa along with American jazz divas Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington as important influences. She also lists Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Al Jarreau as among her favorite male voices, though her earliest vocal influence may have come from 1930s icon Fats Waller.

On her latest recording, Bossa, Jazz ‘n’ Samba, Ascher’s gorgeous voice is surrounded by lush orchestrations from such respected veteran MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) artists and composer-arrangers as Dori Caymmi, Gilson Peranzetta, Amilson Godoy and Cristovao Bastos. This spirited cross-cultural project – recorded at the famous Gravodisc studios in Sao Paolo, Brazil – is a colorful testimonial to the pure talent and hypnotic vocal stylings which will continue to drive Patty Ascher’s rising star skyward in to the highest reaches of American and multi-national jazz culture.

This special event also features San Jose based singer and Brazilian gutarist CADO opening the night, and a "Sounds of Brazil" dance party at the end of the night featuring guest DJ Bluz.

CADO brings Brazil with him wherever he plays. No matter the language of his songs, he speaks like a poet, sculpting stories in Portugese, Spanish, and English. CADO grew up listening to Brazilan music, but never started playing until the age of 19. As a teenager, he embraced artists like Nirvana and Silverchair, and was later fortunate to meet some of the players who inspired him: Seu Jorge, Jamie Collum. He moved from Brazil to Portugal at a young age, and later moved to San Jose. Soon after, at the age of 21, CADO transitioned from playing an electric guitar to a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar at 21. From rock to samba, jazz, pop, soul, alternative, and bossa nova, his style balances melody and raw performance conviction. CADO performed at our very own Summer Fest in 2010.
